Procter & Gamble joins a list of three other companies that had to recall consumer products this year because of the presence of benzene. Benzene is a known carcinogen.
The voluntary recall, issued on Dec. 17, affects 32 aerosol hair products across seven of the company’s brands. In a statement, Procter & Gamble said that no adverse events have been reported to date related to using these products. The recalled products are spray dry shampoo and conditioners from the following brands:
- Pantene
- Aussie
- Herbal Essences
- Old Spice
- Secret
- Hair Food
- Waterl<ss
Old Spice and Secret were also recalled on Nov. 23, 2021. Issuing a recall may minimize the product’s impact on an unsuspecting customer, but it does not absolve a company from liability for defective products.
Other Consumer Recalls for Benzene
Proctor & Gamble is just the latest company to warn consumers this year to stop using products because benzene was detected. All companies have said the cancer-causing ingredient wasn’t in the product itself. Benzene was found in the propellant that sprays the product. Other companies recalling products because of the presence of benzene include these household names:
- Coppertone (Beiersdorf): Recalled Coppertone sunscreen aerosol sunscreen spray products
- Bayer: Recalled Lotrimin and Tinactin antifungal spray products
- Johnson & Johnson: Recalled Neutrogena and Aveeno aerosol sunscreen products
The recalled products are sold throughout the U.S. in retail outlets and online.
What Should I Do if I Have a Recalled Product?
To determine whether you have a recalled product sitting in a bathroom cabinet, check out the product code, usually found on the bottom of the can. Compare that product code with the product codes associated with the P&G recall found on the company’s website. If your product matches the recall, you should discontinue using the product immediately. You are entitled to a full refund of your recalled product. Visit that product’s website to learn more about reimbursement for eligible products.
